Stopford Projects Limited began trading 39 years ago, in 1982. The company was established as an engineering design house to support the requirements of ICI group companies. Originally located in Stockport, the company’s founders took inspiration from the city’s Anglo-Saxon name and Stopford was founded. In 1984 we moved our head office to Ellesmere Port & as the business continued to expand, a subsidiary office was opened in Huddersfield.
Throughout the 1980s and 90s we supported our proximity clients in the Chemical and Petrochemical sectors in both the North West and Yorkshire. Stopford continued to open offices across the UK to support our main client ICI. In the early 2000s as our client base grew, we started to operate on a global basis, which coincided with the breakup of ICI, now focusing our operations from our head office in Ellesmere Port.
In 2005 we diversified our activities into the renewable energy area, opening an office in 2007 at the Lancaster Environment Centre in the grounds of the University. We began the development of our suite of novel process technologies in 2009 and in 2013 we received £1m investment from the North West Fund to help drive forward our innovative technology and growth plans. In 2014 we diversified into Water & Utilities utilising our knowledge gained in the chemical and petrochemical sectors providing health safety and environment consultancy. In 2015 the company began trading as Stopford Energy & Environment and in 2017 the company forged strategic partnerships with a focus on green technology with business and academic institutions. In May 2021 we launched our new website to reflect our ambition to lead the way in engineering a sustainable world towards a low carbon economy.
