Engineering Support for a Multipurpose Plant

Stopford was commissioned by the German subsidiary of a multinational company who provide bio-based solutions to the pharmaceutical sector. The client was running a laboratory scale plant in order to produce chiral intermediates via a biocatalyst or an enzymatic media and required the installation of a new multipurpose plant in the laboratory in order to increase production. The plant would hold a new glass reactor and distillation column in adjacent fume cupboards. The client requested that Stopford provide additional engineering support for this project.

The work was carried out in 2 phases. Phase 1:

  • Carry out a review of the proposed design and develop into a line diagram of the process
  • Host and attend a design review meeting
  • Facilitate and scribe a hazard study 1 & 2

Phase 2:

  • Carry out a hazardous area classification, including report and drawing
  • Facilitate and scribe a hazard study 3 (HAZOP)
  • Update the line diagram to reflect findings from the above
  • Implement any process/design changes that arise
