Set up Construction Management capability within Stopford to comply with legislation (CDM Regs); LPG Storage audits; numerous mechanical equipment ignition risk assessments and fire risk assessments to comply with DSEAR; CDM Co-ordinator on several large projects; supported Principal Contractor role of construction management projects and generated required documentation, including H&S Files; responsible for QA management for the company; general support on all aspects of H,S and QA; Process safety support; Water treatment; LPG; Waste-to-energy facilities

I have been involved in design projects with multi-disciplinary teams, surge and Fault tree analysis for the water industry, pressure relief calculations.

Completed a three day Aspen HYSYS process modelling course; completed an industrial project for the IChemE on gasification; working towards chartered status. Self- learning of surge software for a surge analysis, IChemE Layers of Protection Analysis Training.

What experience have you had whilst working with Stopford?
Structural design of a large number of foundations and containment structures for existing and new build petrochemical installations. Structural analysis of existing structures in the chemical, petrochemical and water industry and designed new and remedial works. Also worked on land reclamation and waste to energy projects.

What CPD have you done since being at Stopford?
This has mainly consisted of participation in internal management courses and lunchtime presentations of products and services from within the civil engineering industry. I regularly attend ICE talks.

What experience have you had whilst working with Stopford?
Project management; liaising with clients, suppliers, manufacturers and in-house departments, including civil, process, mechanical and design. On-site ATEX inspections, surveying of storage tanks, research and report writing for innovative waste-to-energy systems.

Attended various in-house training workshops. Site and show visits, support towards chartership.

What experience have you had whilst working with Stopford?
Numerous projects as front end process engineer, hazard study leader, project manager and project director. Managed the BASF contract from 2002. Responsible for Avecia Olympiad and Allergan projects, Kemira PAX, Falmouth, Total, Ghana, Vadeco. Involvement in Yorkshire Water Digester Safety Group and currently providing consultancy support to Calysta.

Involved in varied projects: Preparing mechanical pipework, valve & equipment specifications for various systems and Fuel Storage Depots; Mechanical handling; Design of Bio-ethanol Blending facilities at distribution terminals; Developing options for HVAC humidity control & energy savings; Lead Validation Engineer for preparation of Functional Design Specification (FDS), Design Qualification (DQ), System & Impact Assessment, Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ) protocols.

What experience have you had whilst working with Stopford?
Varied projects doing process design, feasibility studies and safety studies. In the last six years work has concentrated more on doing fire assessments for petrol terminals and specifying fire protection equipment. Spent five years in a fine chemicals plant doing plant support and process sitings. This involved production of safety and environmental studies, IPP application, process and product validation and plant commissioning.

Completion of module Fire Risk assessment & Management and assisted a course in Fire Safety Design part of an MSc on Fire & Explosion Engineering by Leeds University. Attendance to various safety courses imparted by Zeneca Hazards Group

The Role

Stopford Energy and Environment is looking for a part-time (22.5 hrs per week) Finance Director with demonstrable experience in leading internal financial activities of the company in accordance with policies, goals and objectives and contributes to the Stopford Board by providing a challenging perspective to the decision-making process to maximise the performance of the business.

The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for the visibility of financial performance on all projects, managing the interface between finance and project managers and implementing new project performance tracking initiatives and will work in partnership with the Board of Directors and alongside the Managing Director to keep them informed of project performance and challenges.

S/he will be responsible for enhancing the internal organisation processes and infrastructure that will allow Stopford to grow profitably and fulfil its mission.  S/he will be responsible for strategic finance, commercial finance, project profitability reporting and financial systems and their interfaces.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have:

  • An accounting qualification. A master’s in business administration would be preferable.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior management role, working in a SME environment
  • Experience of working with finance and accounting regulations
  • A deep experience in project budgeting and fiscal management
  • A proven track record of effectively leading the financial aspects of the business with a complex array of projects with the ability to leverage strengths across project areas
  • A track record of success facilitating progressive organisational change and development within a growing organisation
  • Excellent judgement and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • The ability to be analytical and a decisive decision maker with the ability to prioritise and communicate to staff key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organisational goals
  • A commitment to quality projects and data driven project evaluation
  • Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise
  • An energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administration initiatives
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, Stopford’s board of directors, its investors and staff
  • An ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker
  • A passion for Stopford’s mission and able to promote and communicate the philosophy, mission and values of Stopford to external and internal stakeholders
  • A thorough understanding of finance, systems and HR
